Poetry People Community Interest Company
Poetry People brings poetry to people and people to poetry, often for the first time.
Led by Dean Parkin and Naomi Jaffa, Poetry People initiatives reach out to the wider Suffolk community through creative projects, competitions, workshops, publications and live events. In 2018, Poetry People devised and delivered The Grit, a community project to revive and celebrate Lowestoft's former Beach Village which was known locally as The Grit. This project comprised 32 creative writing workshops with 240 children from eight local primary schools; the creation of a Key Stage 2 resource to teach The Grit's history to future generations; reminiscence sessions in local care homes with former Beach Village residents; video poems and a new installation in the Lowestoft Maritime Museum; GritFest, a free outdoor celebration day attracting 2,000 attenders; 'Pearls from The Grit', bringing Beach Village characters and stories to life in a professional and outstandingly well-received new touring theatre show - nine performances, seven venues, 1,200 attenders. Poetry People is responsible for the annual Suffolk Young Poets Competition, one of the UK's oldest poetry showcases for children's writing and which attracts between 1,000 and 1,300 entries. Each year, Poetry People runs workshops in Suffolk schools to encourage young writing talent and to generate entries for the Competition which culminates in an evening family event in the New Cut Theatre (our arts centre building) featuring the ten winners reading their own winning poems.
