The Piecemakers are a group of 16 women and 1 man. We are textile artists based in a studio in Halifax and meet once a week to work on a collaborative project.
We came together to work on an Arts Council Funded project for the Halifax new library. We created a large textile display, 'Halifax', which is on permanent display in the library. The group wanted to continue meeting and working together and are currently focussed on another group piece which we plan to exhibit once completed.
The Piecemakers are currently applying for funding for this project which we need in order to pay for materials and space to work. As a group we enjoy the outreach sessions we have carried out at a variety of places including Ogden Water, Copley School, Shibden Hall, Churches Conservation Trust and more. We love being able to pass on our skills to both young and old people who attend.
We are hoping to work with both Causey Hall and Staying Well in the near future to run sessions aimed at helping people experiencing isolation and loneliness. The plan is to invite people to sessions where they can meet others in a relaxed setting whilst working on textile related activities and enjoying a brew !
Most of our members are aged 70+ themselves, and so attending the Piecemakers group itself serves a purpose in giving the members a focus. Many live alone and look forward to our meetings to catch up with other members. The group have formed close bonds and are very supportive of each other.
