    The First Peer-Reviewed Study on AI in Higher Education Is Out. The Findings Are Unsettling

    On a Tuesday afternoon, if you stroll through the library of nearly any large university, it appears as though studying has always taken place. With their laptops open, headphones in, and coffee cups piling up, students are seated at long tables. However, something is different when you look at the screens. A large number of them do not write. They are prompting, accepting, editing, and reading. The actual process of writing an argument—sitting with a blank page and forcing an idea into coherent prose—has been discreetly moved to a token-based server. The results of the first peer-reviewed study to investigate this change in higher education with any methodological rigor have now been published, and they are the kind that are typically discussed in private among faculty members before being made public.

    The study’s main conclusion is not that students are engaging in traditional forms of cheating. It’s more intricate and, in certain respects, more concerning. When students used AI tools, their written work was consistently of a higher caliber than when they didn’t. Their prose was cleaner, their arguments were more logical, and their essays were more structured. The AI-assisted students appeared to be better learners on all surface metrics. However, the difference reversed when those same students were assessed on their capacity for independent analysis, or their capacity to solve a new problem on their own. Students who had relied significantly on AI performed noticeably worse on their own. It turns out that learning actually takes place in the cognitive work that the tool had been performing.

    Specifically, this is not a surprising discovery. Anyone who has taken the time to consider how skills evolve, whether in writing, math, medicine, or any other area requiring judgment, knows that the challenge is what matters. Reading well-crafted arguments does not make you a better thinker. By creating flawed ideas and understanding why they are flawed, you improve as a thinker. With startling efficiency, AI eliminates that friction. It generates the product without the process, and education has always sold the process, whether or not that was explicitly stated.

    The full effects of this might not become apparent for years. It might take some time for the gaps to become noticeable when the graduates with AI-assisted degrees enter the workforce, graduate programs, and professional settings. Alternatively, they might not show up at all, in which case the study’s worries are exaggerated and the adaptation happens more quickly than the pessimists think. Speaking with university instructors, however, gives me the impression that something has already changed in the nature of classroom discussion, including the types of questions students pose, the assurance with which they navigate uncharted territory, and the unease that arises when the prompt box isn’t available.

    It is difficult to overlook the similarities with what researchers are seeing in younger age groups. A pattern of emotional and social outsourcing has been found in studies of teens using AI companion apps; young people are turning to chatbots for solace, guidance, and company in ways that seem to lower their tolerance for the uncertainty and work that genuine human relationships demand. The structure is similar, but the mechanism is different: a tool that makes a difficult task easier ultimately reduces the person’s ability to complete the difficult task. In the end, Quentin, a 15-year-old whose use of chatbots was extensively documented for a New York Times article published in April, referred to his hundreds of hours spent with AI companions as a waste of time. When he stopped, he saw that he had improved his ability to communicate with real people and had become more productive and present. To realize the costs of the habit, it had to be broken.

    Universities are negotiating this with little direction and institutional tendencies that lean toward caution and contradiction. There is a peculiar situation where students leave campus more AI-fluent than when they arrived and are then asked to perform as if they aren’t because some faculties have completely banned AI tools from their courses. Others have taken a different approach, incorporating AI use into the curriculum based on the idea that students must learn how to collaborate with these tools because their careers will demand it. There is true logic in both positions. The question of what university is truly supposed to do to a person’s mind is not entirely resolved by either.

    The study’s release coincides awkwardly with another noteworthy discovery from April 2026: a seven-year meta-research project that was published in Nature and found that only roughly half of social science studies could be independently tested. This discovery gave the replication crisis, which has been a background concern in academic research for more than ten years, new significance. The epistemological question that underlies both stories is what makes it relevant here: if knowledge production is becoming more difficult to trust and graduates from institutions that are meant to teach critical evaluation of knowledge are becoming less capable of independent thought, then the two issues compound each other in ways that are genuinely challenging to consider.

    To be fair, there is a counterargument that frequently comes up at this point, and it merits careful consideration. The printing press, the calculator, the internet, and GPS navigation are just a few examples of the technologies that critics claimed would cause people to become intellectually lazy. Most of the time, the technology altered the distribution of cognitive tasks without eradicating the underlying capacity. It’s possible that AI is just the next version of that pattern, and that people’s skills developed with AI will differ from those developed without it, but they won’t be obviously worse. Honestly, that argument can be made.

    However, the peer-reviewed study adds a detail that strains the calculator analogy. Calculators didn’t act like students. AI writing tools generate content that closely resembles the work of an individual who has done the intellectual labor, such as organizing the argument, selecting the supporting details, and finding the right words. Even when it isn’t deliberate, the product is designed to be deceptive. Additionally, the organizations in charge of attesting to the completion of intellectual work are currently evaluating outputs rather than processes, which means they are frequently certifying the incorrect thing.

    It’s genuinely unclear what will happen next. Oral exams, in-class writing, and project-based work that is more difficult to outsource are among the assessment redesign issues that universities are starting to take seriously. A few of these strategies will be effective. There will be some gaming. As technology advances, it will become more difficult to discern the outputs, and doing the work yourself will seem more optional. There’s a feeling that higher education is in the early stages of a reckoning it hasn’t yet figured out how to name when you watch all of this happen in real time, from faculty meetings to library tables to academic journal comment sections.
