The OnePlus Shutdown Could Happen as Early as April — Here’s What We Know

Watching a company that truly altered people’s perceptions of smartphones gradually fade into obscurity can make you feel a certain kind of sadness. OnePlus was not your typical Android manufacturer. It was the company that gave the impression that you could get a phone worth $800 for $400 and that you didn’t have to choose between quality and affordability. According to the majority of reliable reports, the company is currently getting ready to cease operations in the US, UK, and most of Europe, possibly as early as April 2026.
There wasn’t a single, clear announcement of the news. Seldom does it. It came in fragments, with a resignation here, a deleted tweet there, and a PR team directing reporters to a statement that said nothing at all. Yogesh Brar, a well-known tech tipster, confirmed that OnePlus would withdraw from international markets and concentrate on China and India in a post that was swiftly removed. The report was confirmed by a source who 9to5Google claimed to be familiar with the circumstances. At the top, however, the denial machine remained noticeably silent.

The CEO of OnePlus India, Robin Liu, resigned on the day those reports reappeared, which gave the timing an almost theatrical feel. Liu had spent seven years working for the company. He had publicly stood in front of cameras just months prior, assuring everyone that India’s operations were normal, stable, and ongoing and that the shutdown rumors were unfounded. Then, on March 31, he tendered his resignation. The official statement from the company? a succinct note of gratitude and best wishes for his “personal passions.” You can’t help but read between those lines.

OnePlus may have been quietly struggling for a longer period of time than most people were aware. The company’s North American aspirations were once housed at the Dallas headquarters, which closed in March 2024. According to reports, the Palo Alto office currently employs about ten people. Europe had already been devastated years earlier; in 2020, layoffs in France, Germany, and the UK reduced a workforce of about sixty to less than ten. An Indian R&D facility that was supposed to employ 1,500 people by 2022 never came to pass; at its height, it employed about 116 people. On Glassdoor, an employee stated that “Chinese management has no trust in India R&D.” Something like that takes time to manifest.
No PR statement can completely hide the story that the numbers reveal. In 2025, OnePlus’s market share in India fell by more than 30% year over year, a startling decline in a market that was once considered the company’s crown jewel. Its market share in China is only about 1.6%, far less than the 3% target that OnePlus President Li Jie openly stated in January 2024. He told the media at the end of the year that sales were “basically flat.” OnePlus fell by more than 20% in 2024, while the parent company OPPO increased by 2.8%. The math just stops working at some point.
The larger context must also be taken into account. It looks like OPPO is consolidating. In January of this year, Realme, which was formerly a distinct brand that operated somewhat independently, was brought back under OPPO’s control. This announcement was made during CES, most likely in an effort to blend the news into the chaos of tech week. There are rumors that OPPO plans to reposition realme as its low-cost online brand, with OPPO managing offline retail. It appears that OnePlus no longer has a spot at that table. With the OnePlus 15, the Hasselblad camera collaboration that had given OnePlus flagships their unique character came to an end, but it is still present in OPPO’s flagship products. It says a lot just by itself.
There isn’t a clear answer to the question of what happens to current OnePlus customers. A “full guarantee of users’ after-sales support, software updates, and rights commitments” was previously promised by OnePlus in a statement following earlier shutdown rumors in January. Because OxygenOS is essentially based on ColorOS, OPPO can maintain updates without requiring much additional infrastructure, making that commitment worthwhile. However, it makes sense that people who purchased a OnePlus 15 only a few weeks ago are uncomfortable. After leaving the market, companies like LG and HTC fulfilled their update commitments, which provides at least some historical consolation.
The fact that OnePlus is still releasing new products is noteworthy in a bittersweet way. This week, the OnePlus 15T was hinted at in China. For India, the Nord series is still being prepared. A company that seems to be closing its doors in the West while simultaneously introducing new hardware in the East has an odd quality. At this point, it appears increasingly unlikely that those devices will ever reach consumers in other countries.
Seeing this play out is like witnessing the conclusion of a chapter that many believed would go on for a longer period of time. Once among the busiest in the Android community, the OnePlus community forums have already become less active. The brand’s physical store presence has virtually disappeared, according to US consumers. People who adored their OnePlus 7 Pro, 3T, or OnePlus are abundant in Reddit threads. One with its characteristic sandstone back—phones that felt unique, like they were designed for people who genuinely cared. Whether that spirit will find a new home or just vanish along with the offices is still up in the air.
